Mike Sampson is a partner in the firm’s Insurance Recovery Group, and his practice is focused on representing corporate policyholders, including medical marijuana dispensaries, in addressing and resolving complicated insurance coverage issues.
Mike’s work involves many types of coverage, including, but not limited to, commercial general liability insurance policies, professional liability policies, and property insurance policies. Mike spends significant time counseling clients about their insurance needs, providing notice of claims, and negotiating coverage with insurers. When necessary, Mike also represents policyholders in litigation in federal and state trial and appellate courts across the United States. In doing so, he has litigated many issues, including, just by way of example, trigger of coverage, insurer bad-faith claims-handling, other-insurance and non-cumulation clauses, number of occurrences, and abstention. He was part of a team that recently obtained the largest known bad-faith award in Pennsylvania.
Mike is also a frequent speaker and author on insurance-coverage issues, including such issues relating specifically to the medical-marijuana industry. In 2017, he has authored or co-authored a number of articles, blog posts, or other alerts on the latter topic, including so far: (i) “How Does Marijuana’s Legalization in Pa. Impact Insurance Coverage?,” The Legal Intelligencer (Aug. 29, 2017), (ii) “When Assessing Insurance Needs, Medical-Marijuana Dispensaries Must Consider Pennsylvania Regulations,” The Policyholder Perspective (July 21, 2017), and (iii) “For Medical Marijuana Dispensaries, Obtaining Insurance Requires Careful Consideration,” Reed Smith Client Alerts (July 6, 2017).
